Your Value Is Clear to You. Is It Clear to Prospective Members?
Ask an association board what makes membership worth it, and you’ll get a confident answer. The conference. The webinar library. Advocacy. Networking. The directory.
Now look at the membership numbers. For a lot of associations, they’re flat.
The confidence gap
According to Marketing General’s 2025 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report, as cited by ASAE:
- 57% of associations call their value proposition compelling or very compelling
- Only 11% call it very compelling
- 56% have plateaued or declined in membership over the past year
If the value were as clear as we think, the numbers would look different. The problem usually isn’t the benefits themselves. It’s how we describe them.
Access vs. outcomes
Most association marketing lists what members get access to. Prospective members want to know what will change for them.
Association Forum’s FIRE Report put it simply: rebuild the value story around impact, outcomes, and transformation, not access.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- Access: “Webinar library with 200+ recordings.”
Outcome: “Get answers to the regulatory questions your clients are asking, in 30 minutes or less.” - Access: “Annual conference and networking events.”
Outcome: “Meet the people who will refer you business for the next ten years.” - Access: “Professional certification program.”
Outcome: “Earn the credential clients and employers look for, and charge accordingly.”
What nonmembers are looking for
Higher Logic’s 2025 Association Member Experience Report asked nonmembers what would make them join. The top answers: lower cost (44%), more career development resources (42%), better networking (38%), and clearer benefits and ROI (34%).
Notice that “clearer benefits” is on the list. Many of these people would join for things you already offer. They just can’t see it.
The real story lives with your members
You won’t find your best value story in a board meeting. You’ll find it by talking to members. Yet according to Mighty Citizen’s 2025 Marketing Benchmarks, 45% of associations never conduct audience interviews, and 31% don’t use research-based personas.
A few conversations change everything. Ask members: What were you struggling with before you joined? What’s one thing membership helped you do? What would you tell a colleague who’s on the fence? Their answers become your best marketing copy.
Don’t forget who isn’t in the room
In a recent member survey for an association we work with, almost no respondents were under 25, and most were 45 or older. Nearly six in ten had found out about the association from a colleague or employer. About one in ten found it through an internet search.
That’s a loyal base, and a warning sign. The next generation of members won’t hear about you from the person at the next desk. They’ll find you online, and they’ll decide quickly whether you can help their career. Your value story needs to speak to where they are, not just where your longtime members are.
What we build
- Member interviews (usually eight to ten) across career stages and member types
- A value story built on outcomes, in your members’ own words
- A rewritten membership and benefits page that shows prospects what will change for them
